The Renegade Writer

Now this is good exposure …

Today my stepmother forwarded to me a request from her cousin. But first, some backstory.

Nancy Aronie is a name that’s very familiar: Years ago (maybe the early 90s? Feels like years ago!) I read a story of hers in Northeast Magazine, which was, at the time, a Sunday supplement inside the Hartford Courant. These days, Northeast has been relegated to a section of the main paper. I loved Aronie’s article so much that I still have it in my files, all yellowed and dog-earred. It was about her experience working with the late Frances Lear at the now-defunct Lear’s magazine, a story so funny, sad, and poignant that it begs multiple readings. When a friend of mine worked as a personal assistant to a Very Famous Writer (oh, I’m so dying to tell you all who it is — she’s INSANE! The stories are so delicious!) I pulled out Aronie’s article and thought about giving it to my friend as a template to write her own story. Actually, what I begged my friend to do was pitch her story to Cosmopolitan … never mind.

OK, back to the point of all this. Aronie has a show on Sirius and she’s trying to get lots of writers to participate. The e-mail reads, “Nancy’s show has been on for two weeks. She’s as fabulous on air as she is in workshops. Yet, she needs our help. She’s looking for people to send in writing and to call in to the show with comments so read below for details on how. Since the show is run by volunteers who love Nancy’s work and mission, we’ve got to help spread the word.”

From Sirius‘s website:

Writing from the Heart
Premieres: Tuesdays 7 pm ET
Encores: Fridays 7 am ET; Sundays 2 pm ET

Nancy Aronie has been writing and telling her stories for 23 years in newspaper columns, magazines such as McCalls and on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. Dubbed “the midwife for words that want to come out,” she’s been conducting Writing from the Heart workshops for 18 years from her home in Martha’s Vineyard, creating a safe space for writers to express themselves without judgment. Now, in her weekly Writing from the Heart radio talk show, Nancy will introduce a topic for listeners to write about (400 to 700 words), then after e-mailing them to her staff of readers, several will be chosen to be read aloud on Nancy’s show. Comments, (all positive, of course!) will be phoned in live. Join Nancy and everyone who has a story to tell—that means YOU! Unleash your inner writer… Have a question? E-mail Nancy at: writingfromtheheart@lime.com.
Sounds like a great opportunity … go for it!
