Announcing the Renegade Writer Makeover!

September 15, 2006
By Diana Burrell

***UPDATE: I just created a FAQ for the RW Makeover. We’re getting some questions, so as they roll in, we’ll answer them there. Thanks! [db]***

You’ve read our book. You’re breaking tired old freelancing rules and discovering editors don’t blacklist you for e-mailing your queries or pitching over the phone. You’re looking at your A/R and can see that this is your best year ever as a freelancer.

But.

But there’s this one big career problem you have. Maybe you’re really good at coming up with story ideas, but you can’t get a grip on managing your time, which turns those good ideas into untimely ideas. Maybe you’re writing general service pieces for women’s magazines, but what you’d really love to do is write cutting-edge health stories or become a travel writer. Or maybe you have this dream magazine you want to crack, but you’re having a hard time mustering the courage to pitch. Or it could be that you really really want to write a book, but you have no idea how to fit writing a book proposal into your magazine writing schedule. You need help. If only Trinny and Susannah worked with freelancers.

This is where the Renegade Writer Makeover can save your butt. Linda and Diana, along with our crack [no, not that crack] team of makeover artists that includes marketing experts, literary agents, professional organizers, life coaches, image consultants, and book and magazine editors, will work with three lucky blog readers and give them career makeovers. If you’re selected, we’ll blog about the challenges you’re facing and ask our experts to share their professional advice on how you can turn your freelance dreams into a reality. Your job will be to follow their advice and report back to our loyal readers on your progress. We’re going to blog about what our experts say about you, so we’ll be exceedingly choosy who we pick — we want three freelance writers who are highly motivated to make this project a success.

So here’s how to grab our attention. Send us a note at makeover at therenegadewriter dot com telling us how our team of experts can help you with your particular career challenge. How would a makeover benefit your career? Where do you want to be in your writing career by this time next year? Get creative! Send pictures. Paint us a tale of woe. As much as we’d like to spend it or eat it, do not send money or chocolate. Your humble words will do.

Get your e-mail to us by September 30, 2006. We plan to start our makeover feature shortly thereafter.

And remember … when another media site announces their “new” makeover feature, you’ll know they came here first! [db/lf]

How lovely to see your faces, you renegades, when I signed in on Amazon.com last night!

So that’s what Amazon’s new plog feature is all about!

  6. LindaFormichelli on September 16, 2006 at 12:39 pm

    Hi, Lanora,

Wow, really?! I have one of those Amazon Blogs, but I had no idea what a plog was or how it worked. So you logged into Amazon and our pictures came up…? Was Diana giving me bunny ears? ;->

    Thanks,

    Linda

Destiny or fate presents itself once again. Your freelance career makeover contest comes at a time in my life when I am in a scary, but exciting transition. Can’t wait to win.

Thanks, Lanora! That’s pretty cool. I didn’t know that the blog post would pop up on buyers’ Amazon pages — I thought that people would see the blog only when they went to our book page!

This is a really awesome idea. Good work guys!

Hi, I’ve tried to send in twice now, but the email keeps getting delayed and sent back! Thanks for the opportunity, I’m totally excited about the contest!

Well, this is definitely going to take some creativity. With little to no guidelines other than an entry date and the mention that there will be 3 experts, it will be hard to break the rules!

It does look like fun, and even a little daring. Also, an exercise in trust, in being one of three Blog “guinea pigs”. Could be an interesting process – sort of like a BlogReality. I’ll have to think about it…

  16. LindaFormichelli on September 20, 2006 at 11:16 pm

Thanks, everyone, for your enthusiasm about this project! I\’m thrilled about it myself.

What a generous offer from Diana and Linda…and worth a small fortune on the open market if you had to pay the individuals their various consulting fees.

I seem to have gotten myself into a pickle with the Renegade Writer Makeover Contest, which of course is WHY I need a Renegade Writer Makeover in the first place.

I’ve missed your deadline. And I am blaming it on my daughters.

In the past two months, I’ve gotten them outfitted, backpacked, and off and running to third grade (have you seen third grade math recently?!). They’ve also been registered for and are attending ballet and soccer and religion class (I’ve not even forgotten to drop off or pick up once!) They’ve gotten geared up and been taken tent camping (despite the 38-degree overnight temp) and been given a Build A Bear party for their October birthday. Their 28-girl Brownie Girl Scout Troop (of course I’m the leader, silly!) has meetings planned for a pumpkin hunt at Smolak Farms, a camping cookout at the Waltham Girl Scout Headquarters, a bulb-planting afternoon at our grammar school, two service projects in town, and a holiday party.

Whew, okay! Now, where was that email about a Makeover Contest?

Save me from drowning in Mommyland! Saaaaaavvvvveeee meeeeee, I am lost in Mommyland…….!!! I really, really, really, like, really, totally, like, really so need a makeover. Plllllllleeeeeeeaaaazzzzze?

If you don’t agree I’ll have to send you to your room.

Sorry to sound dense, but when the blog says RW #1, 2, 3, etc. they don’t seem to be in date order which was my first thought. So, are these different makeover winners? If so, where might I read about them as individuals.

Will you be running another makeover choosing? I would like to try again.

    Hanna
