“My Ex-Boyfriend Left Me for a Basset Hound!”
According to Gawker.com, opportunities abound at Cosmopolitan for writers with shocking true stories — we’re guessing of the girls-gone-bad/girls-done-wrong variety. Example offered: “My bridesmaids were killed on the way to my wedding.” Good news: the Cosmo editor says she’s interested in stories that aren’t necessarily this dark. Whew! Because my Basset Hound story really needs a home. [db]

So-called ‘lighter’ stories may be easier to find…but they are a lot more difficult to place, that’s certainly the situation in the UK women’s magazine market – despite what editors may say publicly.
I’d bet that in the present climate many women’s magazine editors would by far prefer “My husband dropped dead on our wedding night” (I was at that wedding!) to “Our miracle daughter makes us so proud.”
But still, you never know where a conversation will lead!
Last week I worked on “My Christmas hangover was triplets,” and this week it’s “Bullies made all my hair fall out.” But my favourite so far was “Mummy, why does that lady have a beard?”
Hi, I just discovered your website and blog and I found this tip on Cosmo useful. I ran right over to my 2007 Writer’s Market and looked up the magazine’s submission information, and it says that they don’t accept unsolicited manuscripts and only rarely accept queries. Doh! How then would one take advantage of this opportunity? Am I missing something?
(I’m sure it’s glaringly obvious, but I’m new at this – trying to establish a freelance career.)
Thanks in advance.
