Review: The Well-Fed Self-Publisher: How to Turn One Book into a Full-Time Living

I was excited to get a copy of Peter Bowerman’s The Well-Fed Self-Publisher (Fanove Publishing 2007) as Diana and I have been working all this past summer on an e-book where editors talk anonymously about their writer pet peeves. But little did I know this book would be chock full of information that even authors of traditionally published books can use!

In a fun, edgy-but-conversational tone, The Well-Fed Self-Publisher divulges such information as:

  • Why you need to work up a book proposal for even a self-published book
  • How to create a compelling front and back cover
  • Why you shouldn’t talk about your book in a press release
  • How to get your book into the hands of reviewers and “key influencers”
  • How to ace media interviews
  • Why it’s just as important to be a businessperson as a writer
  • How to price your book
  • Where to go, online and off, for resources on writing, publishing, and marketing your book
  • How to deal with wholesalers, distributors, bookstores, and more

Inspired by the tips in the marketing section of The Well-Fed Self-Publisher, I’m in the process of creating a “media section” of my website with press releases, downloadable sample chapters, downloadable images of our book covers, and other goodies that will hopefully lead to more book reviews and other media mentions. Based on Bowerman’s astute advice, I also created a press release for our upcoming The Renegade Writer’s Query Letters That Rock that ties into an important, timely topic instead of just blathering on about how awesome the book is.

Check out Bowerman’s site for more info on The Well-Fed Self-Publisher plus the many extra bonuses you can get for free or buy along with the book. Even if you have a traditionally-published book, or you’re just thinking about self publishing, or you’re shopping a book around to agents or publishers, you’ll find plenty of information in Bowerman’s book and on his site to help you sell more books and make more money.
