New Market for Writers: FunandBoardgames.com

Full disclosure: The editor is my husband!
Wanted — boardgame-related articles

FunandBoardgames.com is a new website that features daily reviews of board and card games. While most people are familiar with Scrabble, Monopoly, Stratego, Risk, Trivial Pursuit, Jenga, and other mass-market titles, the world of boardgames expands far beyond the shelves of Toys Be We.

Fun and Boardgames (or FAB as we like to call it) introduces readers to new game titles from game publishers in the U.S., Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and dozens of other countries. As with books and movies, each game has a unique style and feel, thanks to the personality of its designer.

While reviews are handled in-house, FAB is looking for boardgame-related articles aimed at a mainstream audience. Articles previously published on FAB include:

  • “The Essen-ce of Gaming” — A look at Spiel, the largest game convention in the world, held each October in Essen, Germany
  • “Party Time! How to Throw a Boardgame Party” — Tips on throwing a game bash, including food, invitations, decorations, and games. (Written by Linda!)
  • “You Want a Piece of This?” — An overview of the piecepack, a generic boardgame system that resembles a deck of cards.
  • “Full-Contact Chess” — A short item on the odd sport of chessboxing.
  • “Monopoly: A Game That Lives Up To Its Name” — A history of this ubiquitous game, including Charles Darrow’s false claim to fame.

What I’m not looking for: Articles on game strategy, reviews, or articles written in an academic tone. If you’re interested in submitting articles to FAB, please send a query (for original works) or a synopsis (for previously published work) to the site’s editor, W. Eric Martin (funandboardgames@gmail.com). If the idea fits the FAB vision, you’ll receive an assignment letter and contract.

Payment is $40 for original work and $20 for reprints. Articles should ideally be 1,000-1,500 words long. Payment for shorter work can be negotiated. Payment is for non-exclusive Internet rights. [lf]
