You ask, we let someone else answer II: Querying during the holidays

Yesterday, Harriet asked whether she should pitch during the holidays. Here’s a perspective from another editor, who wishes to remain anonymous.

“I can’t speak for other mags, but this time of year, we are inundated with pitches. Therefore, our editorial lineup is booked solid for the next 3-4 months. So unless we’re approached by a dazzling idea, it’s more likely something will be denied, or we’ll ask the writer to re-submit down the road. My advice is to wait until Feb or March.”

Well, guys, with such conflicting advice about whether it’s worthwhile to pitch for the next couple of months, how about giving us your take on it? Do you have many of your queries accepted this time of year? If you have, has this always been the case, or is it easier now that you have a relationship with many of your editors?

To me? It means pitch when you want, but give some extra time around the holidays. Every magazine is different, but no one will turn down a spectacular idea.

It also means follow up is that much more important. I am the type who needs to strike–with an idea–while it’s hot. So I write the query and put notes into my calendar about when to follow up…Doubly important to do it now, low key, just check in now and then. If we’re lucky we’ll get 10 assignments in the first two weeks of January (hey, a girl can dream).

Ditto what Linda said. Notice the “…unless we’re approached by a dazzling idea…” in this editor’s response. Since my ideas always aim to dazzle (don’t yours?) it’s not an issue for me. ;-)
