My course also has assignments. My course is about breaking into magazines -- that is, writing a query letter -- and Elaine's is more about what to do once you land an assignment -- how to do the best interviews, how to write a compelling lede, etc. I hope that helps! I'm having trouble discerning which one would be better for me and what the differences are exactly. Elaine's FAQ hints at assignments, but I'm not sure what kind they are and how intensive, and I'm not sure if Linda's course has assignments or not. I'm doing a lot of commercial freelancing right now, but I'd love to break into article writing, so any clarification on the differences between these two very appealing courses would be most welcome!
