Kickstart Your Brainstorming Process

I’m probably the only writer who procrastinates so much that she can manage to procrastinate and brainstorm article ideas at the same time. In the middle of a brainstorming session, I idly typed “ideas” into Google to see what would pop up. One of the best hits was for WhyNot.net, a site where readers can post and vote on ideas like half-length cigarettes, ways to keep snowplow drivers from burying the end of your driveway, and touch-screen restaurant menus. Here’s one reader’s idea for a friendly car horn:

You know those times when you’re stuck behind someone who hasn’t noticed the light has changed? Or maybe you see a friend walking along the street. You honk your horn to say, “Please notice the light has changed,” or, “Hi Dave, it’s me Peter.” But you have to honk lightly or your action will be perceived as obnoxious. Press too softly and the horn doesn’t sound.

Why not have a small button on the stearing wheel that blows a friendly “beep beep” horn? These sounds could even be customized like ring tones.

Yeah, why not a friendly car horn?

This website may help you kickstart the idea generating process; with the sheer number of ideas posted there, you’re sure to run across one that helps you hit upon just the right article topic for your target market.

As an aside, doing something as simple and random as typing “ideas” into Google helped me come up with some article topics. I also tried searching for general keywords like “wellness,” “health,” and “nutrition.” These very wide searches revealed some interesting hits. [lf]

Thanks for pointing this out. I love it. It’s fascinating to see what people think up. What a treasure of ideas for brainstorming articles, too. My mom always wanted refrigerated drawers in the countertop to replace a bulky fridge and conserve energy in the kitchen. I’ll tell her to post it. Why not?

Nice idea! I also use http://www.Wridea.com for brainstorming. You can submit your own ideas and share them and make them public for review/help. And there’s this cool thing where you can make random ideas “rain down” the screen… sometimes inspiration hits when I see ideas fall down and land next to each other that I never would have paired otherwise.
