I think the standard is that you don't need permission to link -- you're not using any of their content, just pointing other people to it.

I have perused much of your site using your search feature to find what the standards are for putting a link to another website in a magazine article. I'm working on an article ref: medical/diagnosis/advocacy and I'd like to put a link in this article to WebMD for various reasons and various articles. I've read the terms of use on WebMD, but cannot find a specific reference to including a link to their site in a magazine article. WebMD seems to freely allow linking to their website from other websites. I've written to them twice now, got redirected, wrote again...still don't have an answer. Also wrote to U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT and received an affirmative answer almost immediately. Are there general rules for this sort of thing? If a website is already out there, can I link freely or do I need permission each time?

Those resources are really helpful. I just started writing for the web and formatting, inclusion of things like images, podcasts, lists and all that are so necessary. I started off with big chunks of text but know that they offer little in terms of readability. I'm slowly figuring out what helps to facilitate the reader and engage them through this medium. Being on the up and up helps to keep things interesting.

Thanks for the post!
