Contest: Name the Strangest Trade Magazine to Win Free E-Course Entry

Pat Curry, who teaches our e-course Writing for Trade Magazines, is running a fun contest right here: Post in the Comments section below with the name of the strangest-sounding trade magazine you can find. Pat will pick the best one, and the winner will get free entry into the Premium version of her course that starts on January 11.

In addition, anyone who enters the contest will get 10% off of the price of Pat’s January 11 session.

The trade magazines need to be real, not made up, so you may want to point us to the website of the magazine or a mention of the magazine online.

Hint: You can find hundreds of trade magazines at TradePub.com, and there are a bunch in Writer’s Market as well. But don’t rely on these resources too heavily — be creative! Another hint: When you find a good trade magazine, go to the publisher’s website to find out what else they publish. Many trades are not listed in directories.

The deadline is January 4.

My entry? Pig International. Can you beat that?

Let the contest begin…and good luck! [lf]

I don’t wish to enter the comp (am in the UK so the course won’t work for me!) but just had to share Tunnels & Tunnelling International…

  4. Elizabeth Whalen says:

My favorite trade magazine title is The Official Meetings Facilities Guide, or OMFG. Looks like they’ve wised up and changed their name, though: http://www.omfg.com
Here’s what the magazine looked like: http://www.neatorama.com/2007/08/16/omfg-magazine/

“Snips magazine is the leading source of information for those in the fields of sheet metal, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, metal roofing and architectural sheet metal.” (source: http://www.tradepub.com/free/sn)

  6. My entry: Multifamily Executive

A parenting publication for non-traditional families? Nope – Real estate. :)

Harriet, I have to know…what is Talkers magazine?

I have actually written for Pig International’s sister publication – Egg Industry.

  9. Jaimie says:

Halloween is long gone. But, Girls & Corpses features “Dia de los Muertos” year round — with a touch of sex appeal! For necro-obsessed readers, check out the magazine’s Coffin of Contents for a Night of the Living Dead meets Hefner’s Mansion experience.

  10. I’ve written for dozens of trade magazine. The funniest named one being Pile Driving Monthly, which refers to driving concrete piles in to the ground, not the sexual position known as pile driving.

  11. Hilda says:

The CDC puts out my favorite — Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report.

    Shannon Hill wrote:

    Lubes’n'Greases
    Europe-Middle East-Africa
    Magazine
    http://www.lngpublishing.com/LNGmagEMEA/index.cfm

It’s quoted as “Lubes’n'Greases Europe-Middle East-Africa is the first independent regional business magazine for and about the lubricants, base oil, additives and lube packaging industries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.”

But it still sounds slightly perverse!

  15. Ami says:

    Here’s my entry. :)

Flow Control: “Serves process, manufacturing and engineering industries with the primary end products and services in Food & Beverage”

Sounds more like something you’ll find in the personal hygiene aisle, though.

  21. Pat Curry says:

Oh man, this is tough! I’m seriously impressed with the entries. A couple of them were disqualified (ahem, “Girls and Corpses” is NOT a trade magazine!) but the rest are pretty amazing. I will confer with my panel of experts and announce a winner by EOB Wednesday.
And, in appreciation for all these great ideas, everyone who entered is eligible for a 10 percent discount off the price of the course.
    Thanks, everyone!
    Pat

  22. Jaimie says:

Wow! Contests are supposed to be fun — at least that’s what I thought. But, I’m not sure why it’s necessary to (1) call out my post when “A couple of them were disqualified…” and (2) bother posting up my comment to begin with if I incorrectly identified a trade magazine. I’m interested in learning about writing which is why I’m here. But, no one likes to be singled out. Congrats to the winner and I wish everyone a great writing year.

  23. Pat Curry says:

Hey, Jaimie. I’m so sorry to have hurt your feelings. I honestly thought your comment was a joke and I responded in kind. But you’re right – “Girls and Corpses” is about as strange a title as you’re going to run across on the newsstand! And I should have given people a good definition of what a trade magazine is so that you’d know what to look for. Trade magazines are business publications geared to the people in a particular field.
I hope you’ll accept my apology.
All the best for a great year in 2010. Feel free to shoot me a note at patscurry@bellsouth.net with any freelance-related questions.
