Student Kudos: Sarah Zobel in Spirituality & Health

Congratulations to Sarah Zobel, who wrote a great query on sensory gardens in my Write for Magazines e-course: The resulting article is in this month’s issue of Spirituality and Health — and when I went to the bookstore to take a peek, I was thrilled to see that it is a cover story! Sarah built her article around the tragic but uplifting story of a family who built a sensory garden — a garden that appeals to all the senses, not just sight — for their sick little boy. She then goes on to discuss sensory gardens and even offers a sidebar on gardens to visit. It’s a beautiful article, complete with impressive photos. This is Sarah’s first national clip — kudos, Sarah!

Thanks, Linda! I’m flattered by your kind words. And let me say that it really would not have happened without your course, which took me step by step through every detail in the process of focusing on an idea, finding and interviewing experts, writing a title and a lede, and putting together the query. All of that was undergirded by your positive support throughout. I highly recommend the course to anyone starting out, or needing a refresher in the steps to selling a magazine article.

This is great – way to go Sarah!

  3. Sarah, I had tears in my eyes when I saw your byline on that wonderful story!

Can you tell our readers how you found the family that you interviewed who created the sensory garden for their son?

  4. Sarah says:

Yes, but it’s not such a good story! They are neighbors–our kids are in school together. I’ve always thought the sensory garden was an amazing thing to create, and I especially liked the idea of opening it to others. Before them, I had never heard of sensory or therapy gardens.

But I did have to track down the experts I interviewed, and I did that using your suggestions.

  5. Thanks, Sarah! I know, the story was tragic. That poor family…I have a toddler, and I just can’t imagine.
