The Renegade Writer: A Totally Unconventional Guide to Freelance Writing Success (Kindle Edition) by Linda Formichelli and Diana Burrell.
Written by two freelancers who broke the rules to win the game, this Amazon-bestselling book contains a wealth of information for writers who are frustrated by the seemingly limited ways to operate in the freelance market. It explains that freelancers can negotiate for more money and better terms without risking their careers, shows that editors are not the writer-gobbling monsters many freelancers fear, and explains how to establish and foster work relationships. In this updated second edition there are more ideas, more rules to break, and more resources to get started. As inspiration, the book includes examples of real writers who have gone against “expert” advice and flourished. Being shy doesn’t pay, and following the rules puts a writer in a long line of other sheep; with this text as a guide, writers can step out of the herd and build a successful business in a crowded market. Become a Confident Freelancer by Linda Formichelli and Diana Burrell.
One of the biggest challenges freelance writers face isn’t lack of talent or knowledge, but a profound lack of self-confidence. Linda Formichelli and Diana Burrell, co-authors of the cult classic Renegade Writer titles, noticed that confidence levels in their students were actually inversely proportional to the amount of talent they had–that is, the most talented, able-bodied writers were the least confident about their abilities!
In 2012, Linda and Diana offered a teleseminar called “Become a Confident Freelance Writer,” which offered ten motivating tips to help build confidence so writers could achieve the success they dreamed about. That teleseminar ended up becoming their most popular and well-attended. Attendees and those who couldn’t make the call begged for a transcript–and here it is!
In this short eBook, you’ll learn:
- The good news about what editors think of you. (Hint: They often don’t at all!)
- How to beat the curse of perfectionism.
- How to gain confidence when you have no money coming in.
- How pretending you’re confident can make it happen.
This is a transcript of the actual seminar, which means the authors have done minimal editing. The ums and ahs have been removed, the transcriptionist’s spelling has been corrected, and sentences that were muffled and/or confusing on tape were rewritten. Otherwise, it’s a faithful rendition of the one-hour seminar.

What others have to say:
I would very much like to have tea with the authors; unfortunately I’ll have to settle for reading their book. Friendly and experienced, Diana and Linda offer excellent advice for breaking into magazines and address many writerly concerns, such as how to deal with follow ups, a lack of clips, and editors who ignore you. The second part of the book is even more enlightening – real query letters complete with comments from the editors who received them. It’s like having an editorial super-decoder ring at your service.
The first half of this book provides valuable information about breaking into magazine markets. Although the tips are professional and ethical, Diana and Linda are quite funny while talking to us — and that’s the tone of this book. The authors are talking to their readers, not at their readers. I literally laughed out loud several times while reading. The second half of the book consists of samples of successful query letters and comments from the editors who gave the assignments to the writers. This information alone is worth the cost of the book a hundred times over.

Commit: How to Blast Through Problems & Reach Your Goals Through Massive Action by Linda Formichelli.
Thinking small — living inside the box, keeping our greatness inside us — is what consigns us to this life of what-ifs and if-onlys. If we have big dreams and big problems, we need to go after them in a big way. That’s what Commit is all about.
Committing is taking massive action to solve a problem or reach a goal. It’s pretty much the opposite of the baby-steps approach. When you Commit, you do whatever it takes to make happen what you want to happen. You can use one giant, crazy, unbelievably powerful tactic, but it’s even more effective to combine several tactics at the same time — which we discuss in this self help e-book.
Committing is also about gathering so many resources and so much support that you can’t go wrong. In the e-book, we talk about hiring help, creating accountability, and amassing the resources you need to get off to a mighty start. In this concise and actionable personal development e-book, you’ll also find details on how to prepare for your Commit practice…how to troubleshoot common problems…and 20 ideas for reaching your goal or solving your problem through massive action.
Commit isn’t one of those woo-woo motivation e-books whose helpfulness ends once you close the book…it contains actionable advice with real-world examples based on people’s most common goals: Losing weight, starting a business, earning more money, finding a partner, healing a relationship, learning a language, and more. Each section boasts an assignment that you can do right then before reading on, so that by the end of the book you’ll have your Commit plan rolling.
Tired of just wishing you had what it takes to start that business, get fit, find the love of your life, learn a new skill, go back to school…and more? Self improvement starts with Commit.
